1875 Winslow Homer Matted Wood Engraving

The Battle of Bunker Hill - Watching The Fight From Copp's Hill, In Boston

This patriotic print celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill was Winslow Homer's last illustration for Harper's Weekly, ending an association which began 18 years earlier in 1857. The author of  "Winslow Homer's Magazine Engravings," Philip C. Beam, New York, 1979, notes the event on page 36:

As a finale, Homer designed two engravings in 1875. The first was entitled The Battle of Bunker Hill - Watching the Fight from Copp's Hill, in Boston. It appeared in the June 26 edition of Harper's Weekly and marked the end of a long and memorable association with that magazine. It was the leading journal of the day, as Homer was its leading illustrator.

"The Life and Work of Winslow Homer," Gordon Hendricks (New York, 1979) also pictures this engraving on page 119 and notes that Homer,

signed it on the lower right "W. H. 1760" leaving us to guess why it is not 1875 or, but a curious by understandable caprice, 1775, when the Battle of Bunker Hill really occurred.

Below is the print as matted (cropped a little in this picture) and enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve (which creates the camera reflection). The print is in very nice condition and the mat will pop into a standard size 16 x 20 inch frame
