Winslow Homer Matted Wood Engraving

"FIRE-WORKS ON THE NIGHT OF THE FOURTH OF JULY"

This July 1868 engraving was taken while Winslow Homer was residing in New York City and was probably of a scene in the city the evening of July 4th as the title suggests. It is one of the few Homer crowd scenes (See also, New England Factory Life -"Bell-Time") and his artistry is best seen close up, as shown by the picture below which captures the bottom right corner of the engraving. Notice the man in the top hat with the rocket striking his top hat and pushing it over his eyes. See the range of emotions on the faces of the people. If you look closely you can see Homer signing the engraving with his initials on the man's coat.

Below is the print as matted (cropped a little in this picture) and enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve. The print is in very nice condition and the mat will pop into a standard size 16 x 20 inch frame.
