Winslow Homer Double Folio Civil War Wood Engraving
"THE NEWS FROM THE WAR"
This double size wood engraving by Winslow Homer
published on June 14, 1862 has a lot going on, including a self-portrait of the
artist.
The author of "Echo Of A Distant Drum: Winslow
Homer and the Civil War" (New York, 1974), Julian Grossman, comments
on the tragic figure of the women below as well as the lighter self-portrait of
Homer shown in more detail below.
In News from the War as in The Songs of
the War a woman is again placed in the center of a montage. Can anything by
more tragic than Wounded? As he of did in instances of high emotional
drama, Homer hides the face of the woman reacting to the tragic news. Almost in
sensitivity to the demands of the moment, he depends on the forward slump of the
figure to express his full meaning.
In the lower left-hand corner of this page from
Harper's Weekly. Homer show Our Special Artist - himself? - sitting on a barrel
and sketching the portraits of two soldiers who are 6' 7" tall, much to the
delight of the onlookers.
The print will come to you matted and enclosed in
a protective plastic sleeve.
