1850s Hand Colored Stone Lithographs of Birds of the West

Gila Woodpecker

These beautiful woodpeckers are the was first identified by ornithologist John Cassin. On the upper margin of the print it says "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys 35th Parallel" and "Birds --- Plate XXXVI." On the back of the backing mat is a part of the railroad expedition and survey report which states,

"First described from specimens collected by the expedition. We saw this bird continually almost during our march along the Big Sandy, Bill Williams' Fork, and the Great Colorado, but it was with great difficulty that we procured several specimens, on account of its shyness."

The print will come to you matted and in a protective clear plastic sleeve. The paper is a little darker on the right and top margins and there is a little dot, as shown, above the top bird's shoulder.
