1850s Hand Colored Stone Lithographs of Birds of the West Swainson's Hawk
This is one of the three Swainson's Hawks we offer, also known by its scientific name Buteo Swainsoni. On the upper margin of the print it says "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys ---38th, 39th, 41st Parallels" and "Birds --- Plate XII." The description of this bird by S. F. Baird in the 1859 Report on the Railroad Expedition and Survey is enthusiastic about the discovery of this species:
