Costa's Hummingbird

This hummingbird shown in three views is called "Coste's" or "Costa's" hummingbird. On the upper margin of the print it says "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys 35th Parallel" and "Birds --- Plate XIX." The description from the railroad expedition report that comes with the print says this species hummingbird was first recognized as belong to the fauna of the United States from specimens collected by the expedition. It says this specimen was found at Bill Williams Fork, New Mexico and notes,

Approaching near the coast of California, where the valleys were clothed with flowers of every hue, these diminutive and interesting little creatures were continually flitting before us.
