Punch Civil War Wood Engraved Cartoon

"THE 'SENSATION' STRUGGLE IN AMERICA"
June 7, 1862

This original June 1862 cartoon from Punch pictures the North and South in a struggle to the death with daggers raised by each on the edge of a cliff leading to the abyss of bankruptcy and the Northern combatant clinging to a broken branch labeled "The Union." By the time this cartoon was published the fighting had begun in earnest with Bull Run occurring the summer before and in the spring of 1862 battles occurring throughout the land with Ulysses S. Grant winning at Fort Donelson and Shiloh (Pittsburgh Landing) and General McClelland making a slow start to the Peninsula campaign and Stonewall Jackson reeking havoc in the Shenandoah Valley.
