Jedidiah Huntington1789 Signed Tax Writ to Town of Cheshire
This 1789 document (about 9 x 15") was signed by Jedidiah Huntington, Revolutionary War General, who was Treasurer of the State of Connecticut at the time, but shortly thereafter in the same year was appointed by his friend George Washington to be collector of federal customs duties at the port of New London Connecticut. 1789 was the first year of the federal government and President Washington's appointment of Huntington was one of his first appointments as President. A nice summary of Huntington's illustrious military and civil career can be found at this web site. The back of the document has the sheriff's return which indicates that he could not find a selectman or anyone else in Cheshire to pay the tax.
A great historic document with a nice association to Huntington's civil and military career as well as a window on the difficulty of state of Connecticut on collecting taxes from it own towns. The History For Sale web site has a number of Huntington autographs, all of which cost over $1,000. The one offered here is a clear and big signature of Huntington in better condition than most. Price: $175 SOLD
